What’s involved

Keep your stones where they belong

Over time prongs thin and snag. Our jewelers add new metal to worn tips, or rebuild prongs entirely, then re-set and inspect each stone for a secure hold.

If your ring snags on fabric or a stone feels loose, bring it in soon. A small repair now prevents a costly loss later.

What affects the price?

Prices climb with the metal, the number of prongs, and the shape of your stone. Pointed shapes like marquise and princess need protective tips fitted precisely. A full head replacement costs more than a retip because it includes a new part plus carefully resetting your stone.

Common questions

Prong repair questions

What should I do if a prong on my ring breaks?

Take the ring off and stop wearing it until it has been looked at. A broken or bent prong is the most common way people lose a stone, and every day of wear increases the risk. Bring it in and we will check the setting and give you a free estimate.

Do I need prong repair or prong replacement?

It depends how much metal is left. If the prong is worn thin but intact, we can retip it by adding metal to the tip, which is quicker and less expensive. If it has broken off or worn away, the whole prong is rebuilt. We will show you what we are seeing under magnification and explain which one your ring needs.

Can prongs be added to an existing ring?

Yes. If a setting has never held a stone securely, or you would like extra security on a stone with sentimental value, additional prongs can often be added. Whether it suits your ring depends on the style of the setting, so bring it by and we will take a look.

How long does it take to tighten prongs on a ring?

Checking and tightening prongs is usually done the same day, and often while you wait if the shop is quiet. Rebuilding or retipping a prong takes a little longer but is still typically a same-day job.

Is my diamond safe during the repair?

Yes. The work is done on-site at our own bench, so your ring never leaves the building and is never posted to a third party. We check every other prong on the ring while we have it, because a stone that has loosened once has often loosened elsewhere too.
