Before reuse, each stone is inspected under magnification for chips, cracks, and wear that its old setting may have hidden, and you get the findings before deciding.
Softer and treated stones, emeralds, opals, fracture-filled anything, need gentler handling and honest talk about risk; some stones are safest staying in settings that already fit them.
The truth about melting your gold
The romantic image is your old rings melted down and poured into the new one. It is possible, and we do it when the symbolism matters, with a caveat told up front: old jewelry gold carries unknown alloys and solder from past repairs, and casting with it risks porosity, tiny bubbles that weaken the piece. Refiners solve this with industrial purification that a single casting cannot replicate.
The standard practice, and usually the better deal: your gold is weighed and tested, credited at its metal value against the project, and the new piece is cast in fresh certified alloy. Same financial result, better metal, and the sentiment lives in the stones and the story rather than the atoms.
