How Custom Jewelry Design Works, Start to Finish
Custom design sounds like a luxury reserved for the famous, and it is actually how a working jewelry store solves everyday problems: the ring that exists in your head but not in any case, the heirloom stones that deserve a second life, the band that must nest around a one-of-a-kind engagement ring.
The process is a conversation with checkpoints. You approve everything before it becomes metal, and nothing proceeds past a stage you have not signed off on.
Stage 1: The conversation
Everything starts with what you bring: photos saved from anywhere, a sketch on a napkin, an inherited piece, or just a description and a budget. We talk through how the piece will be worn, what matters most, and what the budget realistically buys, and we will say so plainly if an idea has a durability problem, like a delicate design for a heavy-handed life.
You leave this stage with a direction and a quote range. No commitment has happened yet.
Stage 2: Design and CAD
The design is modeled in CAD, jewelry-specific 3D software, producing photorealistic renders you can inspect from every angle: exact proportions, stone sizes, and metal. This is where the idea becomes reviewable, and revision here costs conversation, not gold.
Expect a round or two of refinement; moving a design is normal, not an imposition. You approve the final render before anything is made.
Stage 3: From file to metal
The approved model is 3D printed in castable resin, invested in plaster, and burned out to leave a perfect cavity; molten gold or platinum fills it. This is lost-wax casting, the same fundamental process jewelers have used for millennia, with the wax now printed to a fraction-of-a-millimeter accuracy.
The raw casting is then cleaned, assembled, and finished by hand, and stones are set under magnification. The bench work is where a casting becomes jewelry.
Stage 4: Delivery, and what comes with it
- Final inspection together: every stone probed, finish checked, fit confirmed on the finger it was built for.
- Paperwork: photos, stone details, and an appraisal for insurance if the value warrants it.
- Aftercare: custom pieces get the same free cleaning and inspection standing invitation as everything else we sell.
- Timeline overall: most projects run three to six weeks from approved design; complex work and holiday seasons run longer, and rush timelines are sometimes possible if you ask early.
Common questions
Is custom more expensive than buying from the case?
Often comparable, sometimes less than a designer name, occasionally more for complex work. You are paying for exactly what you want instead of approximately what exists, and the quote comes before any commitment.
What if I approve a design and hate the finished piece?
The renders are accurate enough that this is genuinely rare, and dimension questions get resolved with printed try-on models when there is doubt. If something is ever wrong against the approved design, making it right is our problem, not yours.
