How to Clean Your Jewelry at Home (Safely)
Most jewelry does not need a professional to look its best; it needs five minutes, warm water, and a drop of dish soap. Skin oils, lotion, and everyday film are what steal sparkle, and they surrender to gentle washing.
The important knowledge is the exceptions: a short list of stones and situations where the standard method, or the internet's favorite tricks, do real harm.
The standard method
- Fill a bowl with warm, not hot, water and a drop of plain dish soap. A bowl, not the sink; drains eat rings.
- Soak the piece 10 to 20 minutes to loosen the film.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, especially behind stones where grime hides; the back of a diamond matters more to sparkle than the front.
- Rinse in the bowl, then in clean water. Dry with a lint-free cloth and let it finish air-drying before wearing or boxing.
Who gets the standard method
Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and gold, platinum, and silver metalwork all love the warm soapy bath; it is exactly what we start with at the bench. Most hard gemstones, garnet, amethyst, citrine, topaz, aquamarine, are equally happy with it.

About the popular tricks
Toothpaste is abrasive enough to scratch gold and cloud softer stones; skip it. Baking soda pastes, same story. Boiling water cracks stones by thermal shock. Ammonia and bleach attack alloys, and bleach can structurally ruin gold; a chlorinated hot tub does the same damage in slow motion.
Home ultrasonic machines are the subtle one: marvelous for a plain diamond band, risky for emeralds, opals, pearls, fracture-filled stones, and anything whose settings are not recently checked, because the vibration finishes what wear started. When in doubt, warm water; when in real doubt, us.
