Wedding Bands: Choosing Rings You Will Wear Forever
The wedding band is the most-worn piece of jewelry most people will ever own: every day, for decades, through everything. That argues for choosing it with at least the care given to pieces worn twice a year.
The good news is the decisions are few: metal, width, profile, detail, and, for engagement ring wearers, how the two rings sit together.
Metal, for the long haul
Everything in our metals guides applies double here, because bands take the most contact of any jewelry. Gold in 14K is the durable default; platinum is the heirloom pick; and the alternative metals, titanium and tungsten, make honest budget bands with two caveats worth repeating: they cannot be resized, and fingers change over decades.
Couples' bands do not need to match metals, and mixed pairs are common; the marriage is in the wearing, not the alloy.
Width and profile
Widths run from about 2 mm, delicate, to 8 mm and beyond, bold. Most women's bands land between 2 and 4 mm, most men's between 4 and 7, but hands vary more than genders do; wide fingers carry wide bands well, and slim hands can be overwhelmed by them.
Profile is the cross-section: flat, domed (half-round), or the crowd favorite comfort fit, with a rounded interior that slides over knuckles easily. Try profiles on; the difference is felt, not seen.
Details and finishes
- Finishes: high polish, satin, brushed, or hammered; matte finishes hide scratches best and can be renewed.
- Diamond bands: pave or channel-set stones partway (half eternity) or all the way around (full eternity); full eternity sparkles from every angle but cannot be resized, so size carefully.
- Engraving: dates, coordinates, a phrase in a spouse's handwriting; inside the band, it is a private constant.
- Milgrain and patterns: vintage texture that dresses a plain band at modest cost.
Pairing with an engagement ring
A band should sit flush with the engagement ring or deliberately apart, not wobble against it. Low engagement settings pair with straight bands easily; some settings need a contoured or notched band shaped to nest around the center stone.

Should we buy bands early?
Six to eight weeks before the wedding is comfortable for made-to-order and engraving; custom contour work deserves a bit more. Off-the-shelf bands can rescue a forgotten errand in a day, and yes, that happens, and no, we will not tell.
His hands swell at the gym. What size do we buy?
Fit for the normal day, not the extreme, and consider a comfort-fit profile which forgives fluctuation. Some active folks add an inexpensive silicone band for workouts and save the metal for the rest of life.
